TIME TO TAKE REFUGE? (November 2007)

Did you know current Building Regulations require all new non-domestic buildings with more than one-storey to provide ‘refuge’ areas - relatively safe places where people who cannot easily use fire escapes and evacuation lifts can call for assistance and wait until help arrives?

Already a highly respected installer of disability equipment such as call systems for the elderly and infirm, Solid State is also one of the UK’s premier providers of emergency voice communication systems.

" Effective two-way communication between refuge areas and building control rooms is essential,“ explains Sales Manager, Graham Bell. “But given the life safety nature of such systems, it is of the upmost importance that the company chosen to install them is a reputable one.”

One of Solid State’s most recent disabled refuge installations was at a prestigious three-storey primary health-care facility in Sandbach, Cheshire, where a SigTEL Compact eight line system was used. The new integrated care centre includes facilities for minor surgery, dentistry, speech therapy, physio-therapy and a hydro-therapy pool. The local social services elderly care team are also to be based in the building.

Says Mark Suffolk, Solid State’s Installation Manager: “SigTEL Compact proved the ideal system for the site. Not only is it fully compliant with BS 5839 Part 9, it is also incredibly easy-to-install. The whole installation took just a half a day”.
