Floral Pavilion, Merseyside
In The Spotlight:
Specialist electrical installation company, Solid State, has completed a major project at New Brighton’s magnificent Floral Pavilion Theatre and Conference Centre.
Merseyside’s most exciting entertainment venue has undergone a radical £10.4M facelift and now hosts a huge amount of events including musical theatre, concerts, dance, award ceremonies and exhibitions. With over 800 seats, the theatre has its own foyer, bars and lounge and adjoins 765m2 of multi-purpose conference, meetings and events space. Joe Longthorne, Elkie Brooks and Billy Ocean are just some of the acts expected to perform this year.
Working to incredibly tight deadlines, Solid State ensured that the show was well and truly on the road by successfully equipping the building with a vast range of life safety systems in record time, including fire alarm, voice alarm/public address, CCTV/intruder, access control and disability equipment.
Communication throughout the building is facilitated by SigNET’s powerful Integrity voice alarm/public address system. At the heart of the high-tech system are racks of amplifiers, housed in a specially designed communication room and connected to speakers throughout the building’s auditoria, dressing rooms, foyers and VIP lounges.
According to Nigel Thomas, Project Manager at Solid State, Integrity’s flexibility was the key factor in the specification of this particular VA/PA system as it functions as a multi-purpose voice alarm, paging and background music system. Says Nigel: “We needed a system that could be easily configured to relay voice communications to different areas of the complex as and when required and Integrity is ideal for this. Actors can be paged backstage to alert them that they are due on stage, the audience can be paged at the intervals to notify them that the show is about to restart and staff can receive personal communications in storage, dressing and scenery areas if necessary. At other times, background music can be played. In the event of a fire or crisis situation, Integrity will facilitate the emergency evacuation of the site”.
Three huge multi-function suites have been fitted with interconnecting systems/microphone inputs. This means that, depending upon events taking place, music/announcements can be played in all three rooms or separately if required. In accordance with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act, C-TEC’s PDA200E induction loop systems have also been installed in each room to assist people with hearing difficulties.
Says Colin Shaw, the engineer who supervised the project: “Audio installations are never straightforward particularly in an entertainment venue as the sound levels and quality must be perfect. Working to tight deadlines is also challenging but ultimately rewarding when the project is completed on time.”
